At an awards gala in Burlington on Nov. 30, 2006, Chroma Technology was honored to be among the top ten small business “Best Places to Work in Vermont.” “To be sitting in a room full of people honoring companies for treating their employees well is a pretty cool thing,” noted Denise Sensor, HR Director for Chroma.

Vermont Business Magazine Chroma Technology Corporation, a Rockingham, Vermont manufacturer of infrared and ultraviolet microscope filters, has been named Exporter of the Year by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Commerce. Chroma exports to more than 52 countries and supports diverse markets worldwide.

Paul Millman doesn't care much for authority, and he's never been one to hide his disdain -- especially during his three years as a salesperson for a microscope filter manufacturer. Irritated by what seemed an overly bureaucratic structure and slow growth, Millman made his frustrations known a little too widely. His employer, Omega Optical, in Brattleboro, Vt., fired him.

An employee-owned, high-tech company could be a model for helping the country bridge the gap between the rich and poor, U.S. Rep. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., told a crowd of the company's workers on Friday. Sanders traveled to Rockingham to meet with some of the employees of Chroma Technology, a company that produces optical filters for microscopes. Earlier this year, Sanders gave a speech that went into the Congressional Record on the success of Chroma.
