Optical Filters for SWIR
Shortwave infrared, or SWIR, is a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum often roughly defined as ranging from 1000nm to 3000nm. Improvements in light sources and detection equipment for this range have allowed for the use of SWIR wavelengths in a number of remote-sensing-based applications. As most items will reflect or absorb SWIR wavelengths rather than radiate them directly, their detection can be used to investigate the homogeneity of pharmaceuticals, the volume of a substance in a visibly opaque package or to cut through a forest canopy to expose the presence of undiscovered ruins. SWIR imaging can also be used to detect minute differences in a surface that are undetectable using visible wavelengths or pierce through dense atmospheric conditions to detect structures from the air or space.
