Bird's Nest Orchid Root
IMAGE DESCRIPTION
A transverse section of a Neottia nidus-avis (Bird's nest orchid) root was stained with safranin O and fast green, and mounted in an autofluorescent medium. The sample was excited with 488nm, 568nm and 633nm laser light, and green, red and far red fluorescence emissions were imaged using a Leica SP laser scanning confocal microscope. The separate channels were composited in Adobe Photoshop to form an RGB image. The image shows the central vascular cells of the root. The prepared specimen was obtained from a collection of microscope slides at the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Cambridge.
