MEMIC honors employers for outstanding workplace safety

PORTLAND, Maine, June 19, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- At its Annual Meeting, workers' compensation insurer MEMIC presented awards for workplace safety to eight of its more than 20,000 policyholders.

At the Portland Museum of Art, MEMIC's senior vice president of loss control and safety services, Karl Siegfried, paid tribute to the following employers for their workplace safety efforts:

The awardees include:

Arbors of Hop Brook LP of Manchester, Connecticut

Arbors of Hop Brook LP is a unique continuing care retirement community, which includes the health care centers Manchester Manor and Vernon Manor. Lauren Caulfield, a director of loss control and safety services at MEMIC, said when she presented the safety award: "The Arbors of Hop Brook have won this award due to their commitment from the top-down for workplace safety, their return-to-work program and all the work they have done with their safe patient handling program."

Chroma Technology Corp. of Rockingham, Vermont

Chroma Technology Corp. is an employee-owned manufacturer of optical filters. "Chroma Technology Corp. has a best practice injury prevention program that gets incredible results year after year," said its MEMIC safety management consultant, Eric Grant. "Chroma Technology Corp. has taken proactive self-directed approaches to reducing non-value added tasks, human touches and ergonomic risk factors." The company has invested in robotic processes and automation that eliminate risk factors and prevent injuries.

Computer Components Corporation of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Computer Components Corporation, which performs precision metal fabrication, has a state certified safety committee that actively addresses workplace hazards and challenges. They regularly review safety concerns, inspection data and conduct incident investigations of workplace injuries.

H.B. Fleming Inc. of South Portland, Maine

H.B. Fleming is a subcontractor owned and operated by registered professional engineers specializing in pile driving, cofferdams, excavation support, drilled shafts and subaqueous pipelines. "Skilled and licensed operators, coupled with experienced and highly-trained workers contribute to H.B. Fleming's excellent safety performance," said Rod Stanley, a director of loss control and safety services at MEMIC. Over half of their employees have been with them 15 years or more.

Kennebec Anesthesia Associates of Augusta, Maine

Kennebec Anesthesia Associates is a provider of anesthesiology and pain management services that recognizes safety to be at the core of their goal to create a healthy workplace where employees can fully realize their potential as professionals.

Lindt & Sprungli (USA) Inc. of Stratham, New Hampshire

Premium chocolate manufacturer Lindt & Sprungli (USA) Inc. puts strong emphasis on worker empowerment and accountability through its active safety committee. Facility-wide site hazard assessments are completed quarterly and recommendations are acted upon immediately. Every injury or near miss is thoroughly investigated for root causes and to develop preventive actions.

Mid Maine CPL, LLC of Lewiston, Maine

Mid Maine CPL, LLC is an industrial bakery that has taken great advantage of MEMIC's online resources, like distributing the MEMIC Safety Net blog to its supervisors and incorporating the information into their regular safety committee meetings. MEMIC's Back Injury Prevention video is used for safe lifting training with all new employees and stretch breaks are conducted at the beginning of each shift. 

Zweigle's Inc. of Rochester, New York

Zweigle's Inc., which began producing "Old World" German sausage products in 1880, is now a 5th generation family owned business. Since 2007 the company has made significant ergonomic improvements to its production process, including replacing 50 pound totes with 250 pound mega-totes to eliminate manual lifting injuries and a device to reduce reaching distance for employees of any size.
